01 June 2009 Posted by Liee at 11:28 AM |Truth be told, I hate summer. I do believe I wasn't really made for tropical weather. The only thing I loved about summer growing up was the fact that school's out and I get to sleep late and wake up late. So students out there, enjoy the summer vacation while you still have it.
Again, let me reiterate: I hate summer. Sure, I spend most of the day in an air-conditioned enclave, but I do walk to work in the morning and the heat and humidity isn't doing anything to preserve the freshness I once had upon stepping out of the shower. Apparently, I had at least one other friend who shares my problem with summer. This post is for her, and of course for all of you who feel the same way I do.
It would have been easy to tell someone to do away with makeup, but for people like us who work, a clean face isn't enough. So what to do then?
Protection
I have recently acquired the habit of putting on sunscreen to the point that it's no longer an extra, bothersome step in my routine. This is a great habit to start since this will do wonders not only for looking good in any particular summer, but for the rest of our lives as well. I'm practically predisposed to a wrinkle-free old age (none of my grandparents were particularly wrinkly, not even my dad's grandma) but I still want to help nature along. Also, I can't be bothered with cancer you know.
I do love the fact that there are tons of choices in the market today regarding sunscreen. My point of contention is the price. Shouldn't we have special pricing since the sun shines more brightly in this part of the world? I know for one thing that it's the price that's putting off people from buying and using sunscreen. This is sad, but I know people are thinking there are more important things to buy than sunscreen.
But let me tell you now that it is not a frivolous purchase, and it's probably one of the better beauty investments you can possibly buy. Sunscreen protects you from sun damage, and will ensure that you have skin to be proud of in your old age. My favorites are the ones from Neutrogena (the spray and lotion type are never sticky and they smell great) and from VMV (super strength at SPF 70!).
Makeup
Of course this is what we really want to know, and perhaps the sole reason why this article was started in the first place. :-)
Makeup is a tricky subject to discuss with the hot and sticky weather in mind. How do we keep our faces from melting in the summer heat? Certainly nobody wants to face clients and co-workers with their makeup melting.
Personally, I tend to go makeup free especially during the summer, save for some special days or when I just feel like putting makeup on. My office is really laid back in terms of dress codes and how one looks, so this really isn't an issue. For stricter work environments, the need to be presentable is a more pressing matter.
Presentable means that you are very well groomed. Keep your eyebrows trimmed, your face non-shiny, and basically fresh. This is what you should aim for. If you find that foundation is too much for the office and for the hot summer weather, why don't you try tinted moisturizers? These products actually work triple time to provide you moisture, protection (as most have SPF), and a bit of coverage. For most people this works great. This way you could still look fresh and office-appropriate.
For other people, tinted moisturizer is not enough. A bit more coverage is needed. I am one of those people and when I want to look particularly flawless, I go to my number one ally: Mineral makeup. Not only do they cover up any flaws that needed covering up, it also feels so light that you'd be hard-pressed to believe that you have anything on. I swear by it, and I also got my friends to use mineral makeup and boy, do they love it. :) And mineral makeup doesn't end with foundation. You could also use mineral blush for that light-as-air pop of color, and mineral lip products that not only make your kisser look luscious, they also protect and nourish. Mineral makeup is a good thing and I urge all of you to try it.
Hair
Hair is not something I fuss with or think about during normal days, but when it's humid and unbelievably hot, I suddenly realize I do have hair on my head.
Some people prefer their hair short in the summer, and that is fine. But based on experience, I prefer my hair long during times like these, because that way I can pull my hair up, away from my face. But the point is, get it away from your face. You'll instantly feel cooler and subsequently calmer because you're not being held down by a ton of hair on your face. Use clips, headbands, sashes, ponytail holders, whatever you have, and just neaten it up.
And another thing that I like to do is put sunscreen on my hair. If you have one of those spray types, spray some on your hand and just run your hands over your hair and you'll get sun protection for your tresses.
Now tell me, what other summer tips you have?

Following Package Directions
17 March 2009 Posted by Liee at 11:10 AM | Labels: 4U2, eye makeup, EyesI'm not really one to follow directions. I'm one of those people who would like to find out how one thing is done on her own. But just for fun, I checked out the eyeshadow sample from 4U2 that I got last month (I am giving away another one, along with other stuff, here). I wanna see what kind of look can be done if I did what the package told me.
So start with this:

This is what is written at the back of the eyeshadow samples I got. Easy enough to follow, I think.
As with all 4U2 eyeshadows, these are quite vibrant. This is what I primarily love about them. :) This color is perfect. Now, on to the application then.
STEP 1 says: Prepare by gently but thoroughly cleansing and moisturizing around your eyes.
STEP 3 says: Complete your smooth, sexy Party look of shimmery sophistication by applying gently the highlight color of your GLITZ Shimmer Eye Shadow just under your brows.

And that's just what I did here.

Not exactly a GLITZ mascara, but I think it works.
STEP 6: Apply a final coat of GLITZ Shimmer Mascara in the color of your GLITZ Shimmer Eye Liner.
Sad to say, I don't have that, or any other green-colored mascara with me. But I guess you guys could imagine that, right?
All in all, it was easy enough to follow and I certainly think very wearable. I actually can't wait to try this with other color combinations. So how did you find it? Tell me about your 4U2 eyeshadow experience. I'd love to see your looks. :)
Czel tagged me today. While I'm not tagging anyone (primarily because the people I know have been tagged already), feel free to answer this if you want:

Wasn't this #1 (and #10) on my list? And because nobody is going to give it to me, I gave it to myself. :)
I'm still practicing, but I hope to come out with more pictures soon.
Happy Birthday to me... wheeeee....
UPDATE: So I tend to respond to comments on my blog. Of course my comments will not be eligible. So when I do the randomizer on the day of the draw and one of my comments come up, I will get the comment below me. :-) All clear?
UPDATE 2: It's obvious that this is my first giveaway, and it's only natural that I tend to forget certain details, like until when you guys can leave comments. So I'm setting this now. Y'all can continue to leave comments until 9:00 AM of March 20th (yes, the draw date). I will post the winners later that day as well. Thank you everyone for your warm greetings, and keep the comments coming! :)
Okay, so now I'm formally starting this giveaway thingie. The prizes are not much, but hopefully, they'll improve once I get the hang of giving away prizes every so often.
Here's what the winner will get:
Like I said, it's not much :-p
More views:
I'll itemize:
- A black bag organizer from my store.
- 4 pairs of button earrings
- A Bath & Body Works hand sanitizer in black raspberry vanilla
- 4U2 glitz eyeshadow sample
- Ice Breaker Sours (Strawberry and Tangerine)
- 4U2 product catalogue
I will gladly ship these items to the winners. I'll draw the entries using Random.org.
You just need to comment here. I hope a lot of people join, so as to merit the use of the randomizer. Tell your friends about the site so there'll be a lot of us who'll join the fun.
I will announce the winner on Friday, 20th of March. If this is a success, I will likely do this again, and perhaps regularly.
So whatcha waiting for chums? Comment away!

March 24th couldn't come fast enough.
Most things are impossible, but I hope a guardian angel/benefactor would just send me stuff from here. I want this birthday to be the birthday that I receive gifts. I rarely get them. I don't know why.
Anyway, I have justifications for almost everything I list here. Treat this as a register, so if somebody gets one for me, I hope they inform me so I could scratch it off the list. Hahah, assuming. As if people are gonna get me stuff. :p
1.Canon EOS 1000D – I've heard of it. I saw it in the flesh in Abenson a while back, held it, fell madly in love with it. It's so light and the features are great. The best thing about it is its price. It is an entry-level DSLR, but its features are quite respectable. It's comparable to the EOS 450D or 400D. I like it. I love it. I want it. I found a seller that sells the entire kit for less than 30k. May lens na and all that. It's superb. And I basically need it. I need better pictures for the blog/s I run. If I really want to be great at this blogging thing, great pictures are a must. Plus, I want to take my photo-taking further. I will probably never call myself a photographer. I just like taking pictures.
2.A smaller, secondary laptop (or since this is a WISHLIST, the Vivienne Tam HP Mini) – Harry is overworked. I use him for work, for all the net browsing and torrenting I do, for the blog, for the Photoshop exercises, for listening to music, watching movies – for everything. I pity him. I'm afraid he might conk out on me due to exhuastion. My aim for a secondary laptop is not vanity, but rather to divide the work I do and not have Harry perform them all. The smaller laptop could be for blogging and the multiply stuff and the email correspondence that goes with it. The movies might also be stored there or whatever. And then work laptop will remain to be Harry. And storage. This seems practical, I think. I don't want this laptop to die on me, as this is my first one and I love it to pieces and I plan to keep Harry forever. And why the Vivienne Tam laptop? Have you guys seen it? It's the prettiest thing! For one thing, it's red. And I like HP laptops. I'm just loyal to the brand.
3.More makeup – I need a lot. To some people, I already have a lot, but I know I still need a lot of things. I kinda need to upgrade my stash to include brands that people look for and ask for. Such is the way the makeup industry works. I do have a list of the stuff I need, so I'll probably put a list somewhere here or something. I really do need a lot – more MAC, shu uemura, Make Up For Ever, Nars, stuff like that. I'd love some Ben Nye stuff though. Some high-def makeup sounds nice. Spray makeup sounds great, too. Makeup is so expensive. Better yet, just give me some Rustan's GCs or something.
4.Brush set – as long as it's of good quality and won't shed the heck off when I wash them is fine with me. The Suesh set is looking good. Get me the set that has the most number of brushes. That'd do nicely. If you're in Hong Kong, the brushes are nice there too. How to know which set to get me? Use your hands. If they're soft enough for you and don't prick or scratch, then they're good. I also kinda prefer synthetic ones because they're softer, but natural sable brushes work really well. It depends actually on what product I'm going to be using them with. The brushes from The Body Shop look great too. Actually, it doesn't have to be a set. Individual ones work great. Of course, MAC brushes are tops.
5.Yarn and Knitting/Crochet Stuff – there's a store in Glorietta 5 where I buy my knitting and crochet stuff. Their selection's great, at least not bad for a small store. I need more crochet needles (I currently only have a #3 needle), and I need shorter knitting needles. I wish I could get a metal one? Hahaha... and more yarn (for knitting or crochet). I like their yarns.
6.A pen tablet for my Photoshopping – when I'm not knitting or crocheting, I like to practice graphic design and retouch photos. It's difficult to do with my finger tracker and all, so a pen tablet will make things easier for me, and will enable me to actually execute the stuff in my head (after practicing techniques, of course). A Wacom Bamboo Fun or a Genius Pen Tablet will do.
7.Photoshop CS4 – there are ways to get this. HAHAHAHA...
8.New flipflops – I've had my Havaianas Filipinas for 2 years and I wear them everyday everywhere. My other pink metallic one was bitten by the family dog and it's not with me anymore. So I really need new ones. Perhaps Havs again, or Ipanema, or whatever, as long as they're durable and will last as long as these babies. And actually, I like Old Navy flipflops, particularly the metallic ones. But any Old Navy flipflop would do, since they're cheap and you could get me like at least 5 of them in all colors. That'd be great. I did sell those last December, and they went by so fast like you couldn't imagine.
9.Sponsorships for the blog (Something Uncontrived) – mainly so that I could get items to write about. And I spend so much time there, that blog has got to earn, right? That's all there is to it. I also want a new design for the blog, maybe get a domain so it'll be somethinguncontrived.com. Suh-weet. :)
10.Canon 1000D – hay. What else can I say? It seems like I really want this since it's keeping me up at night just thinking about it. Now, if somebody was kind enough to buy me the 1000D, then by all means, feel free to get me lenses (a macro lens is nice, as well as a telephoto, and that'd be all the lenses I need hee-hee).
11.A small oven and baking supplies – because I want to bake. Well, Jo and I want to bake and Vio wants to eat what we bake. We bake well, mind you, so an oven will really help, as well as other baking supplies. Please.
A girl can dream, can she?
March is my birth month, and I thought I'd give something away on this site, a raffle of sorts. I'm just rounding up the prizes I'm going to give away. Don't expect much, but at least you'll be getting something, right?
I'll post the rules and whatever else is needed when I post pics of the prizes for the raffle. All I know right now is that I will involve comments on that post (you have to comment to join) and that I have the prizes in my head, I just need to gather them and take pictures of them.
I hope you all like it when you see it, and I do hope lots of people join! This should be fun.
